Being a bacterial, sporicidal and fungicidal antiseptic, Betadine antiseptic ointment is one of the most effective antiseptics available.
The active ingredient in Betadine Antiseptic Ointment is the golden brown povidone-iodine. This colouring is Betadine's highlights the treated area and has the advantage of being able to indicates the activity of the product. As the iodine is absorbed the colour fades. Once the colour has faded to a light yellow it is time to reapply.
In most cases Betadine antiseptics are non-irritating and non-stinging to the skin. They do not permanently stain the skin or natural fabrics and the treated areas may be bandaged, taped or otherwise covered.

Povidone-Iodine preparations should not be applied over a long period and to large areas of the skin (e.g., not to more than 10% of the total body surface and for not longer than 14 days) unless strictly indicated.
